With news being confirmed that influential club captain and central midfielder, Michael Morton, has signed a pre-contract to join SuperSport United in June, Maritzburg United have confirmed to the Siya crew that they are already actively targeting his replacement.
The player fills the all-important, specialist holding role just in front of the club’s back four, and this is a position a lot of clubs in the PSL feel it is a priority to have cover for. The 25-year-old has spent three seasons with the Team of Choice, however it appears he is seeking a new challenge after agreeing terms with Matsatsantsa.
As a result, with Morton heading out of the exit door in the very near future, the club have already identified some replacements they will likely be targeting in the very near future.
This was confirmed to the crew by United’s Team Manager, Quintin Jettoo. He explained that a move for any of the targets identified would only take place when the transfer window re-opens in June.
Jettoo said, “I think we have identified one or two guys. Obviously, at this early stage now with the window close, we haven’t chased them down as such. We have had initial talks with one of the players.
"But first we have to consolidate our position in the PSL, and we hope we can get out of danger sooner rather than later. At this stage it’s impossible to name any names because the market is so fickle in this country.
"The moment you say any names, the player’s price immediately goes up, you know. We are keeping things a bit quiet until June but as soon as something happens, I’ll let Soccer Laduma know first.”
The crew will monitor developments. Watch this space!
