Mission Possible? - Tinkler Reveals Maritzburg Half-Time Talk
When Eric Tinkler joined Maritzburg United he knew how difficult the next few months would be, and he’s revealed what he said to inspire the weekend’s impressive comeback.
The Team of Choice picked up a massive three points over the weekend in a KwaZulu-Natal derby against AmaZulu, with Judas Moseamedi finding the back of the net in the dying moments to take a step closer to safety.
While Maritzburg remain bottom of the Absa Premiership table, they are now just three points away from climbing above Free State Stars, and what some saw as ‘mission impossible’ could now be on the cards.
Regarding what was said at the break before their inspired comeback, Tinkler told the club’s official website, “At half-time, it was important to tell the players not to panic. To keep believing in the strategy that we planned for the game. Keep the tempo nice and high, because they were not dealing with our tempo.
“Our performance in the second half was good, and the only threat AmaZulu really caused us was on the counter, but I don’t think Richard (Ofori) really had to make a save in the second half.
“When that equalising goal went in, I was extremely happy. Then we just took a chance right at the death, bringing on Mohau (Mokate) the strategy slightly by playing the ball earlier into the box, because now we had the height, and it paid off.”
Having picked up six points from a possible 12 since his arrival, Tinkler will be eager to see another big performance this coming weekend when they travel to Johannesburg to face Kaizer Chiefs.
