The Siya crew has been reliably informed by a source in the know that Maritzburg United have agreed on terms to bring a former Kaizer Chiefs head coach on board at the club.
It has been widely reported in local media that Ernst Middendorp was set for a return to Mzansi after a vacant head coach position became available in KwaZulu-Natal.
It was confirmed on Monday that Maritzburg and Eric Tinkler officially parted ways, with Delron Buckley being placed at the helm in the interim position.
However, Siya sources have revealed that the club is close to finalising a deal to appoint Middendorp as their permanent coach.
The former Chiefs mentor recently handed in his resignation at Ethiopian side, Saint George SA, after just one month on board at the club.
While speculation was rife that it was due to an opportunity to return to South Africa, a source close to the German head coach’s dealings revealed to the Siya crew that the 62-year-old actually decided to leave after the Ethiopian government announced military attacks against the Tigray region.
Only thereafter was contact was made with Middendorp following Tinkler’s exit, the source revealed.
Now, indications are that all that is left is for the two parties to cross the T’s and dot the I’s, though an official announcement can be expected in the coming days.
Middendorp will be returning to Maritzburg in what will be his fourth stint at the club.
