Mngqithi Surprised By 'Emotional' CT City

Mamelodi Sundowns assistant coach Manqoba Mngqithi admits they never expected Cape Town City to come at them the way they did.

The Brazilians stretched their lead at the top of the Absa Premiership standings with a 1-0 win over City in Friday’s top-of-the-table clash at the Athlone Stadium.

Khama Billiat came to the party with an audacious volley from inside the box after being teed-up by Percy Tau from the touchline early in the second half.

“I think it was a very good match. We never anticipated Cape Town City would be so emotional and come at us," Mngqithi told SuperSport after the game.

“That had an effect on how we started because we had to adjust and solidify our midfield, but it was unfortunate to lose the coach in the first half because to be honest I don’t think there was any reason for that, but we accept the decisions of the referee because it was a foul on our player and we complained about that.

“But City gave us a run for our money. It’s a relief for us because we wanted to at least beat them once and I’m sure our supporters are happy,” he said after the game.

Regarding Mosimane’s first spell dismissal by referee Victor Gomes for somewhat dissent, the former Golden Arrows coach believes the official was very emotional.

“I was close to the coach. He was complaining about the foul, and I was very close and I never heard insulting words. I think the referee was very emotional but it’s not my space to talk about that,” he added.
