Mamelodi Sundowns President Patrice Motsepe Explains Importance Of Barcelona Visit To South Africa
Mamelodi Sundowns president Patrice Motsepe believes the visit of Barcelona and players such as Lionel Messi and Andres Iniesta to South Africa can inspire an entire generation of aspiring footballers.
The Spanish juggernauts will square off against the Absa Premiership champions in a club friendly at FNB Stadium next week Wednesday as part of the Nelson Mandela Centenary celebrations.
Motsepe believes the encounter transcends football, with South Africa's youth able to witness first-hand what is achievable in the game, and in life, when hard work and determination are employed.
With Barca superstars Messi, Iniesta, Luis Suarez, Gerard Pique and Philippe Coutinho just some of those set to grace the field in Johannesburg next week, Motsepe feels it can be life-changing for young South Africans to see these juggernauts of the game perform in person.
“This game is important for South African football,” Motsepe is quoted as saying on Sundowns. “We are humbled as Mamelodi Sundowns to play our part in a match that’s also part of the Nelson Mandela Centenary celebrations.
"But this is mainly for the youth. I know how big this is for the youth. I remember when I was a young follower of football and I went to the Orlando Stadium and watched all the great players.
"They inspired me. Some of them are alive today and they don’t know it was such an honour for me to just touch them. There are many young footballers who we know that watching Messi and Iniesta will inspire them to realise their dreams, whatever dreams those might be.”
