Kekana: PSL Football Has Grown
Mamelodi Sundowns Midfield Maestro Hlompho Kekana Lauds Increased Competition In Absa Premiership
Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Hlompho Kekana believes the improved quality of football across the PSL should be applauded.
The Brazilians made sure of the top-flight crown following Saturday's 3-1 win over Ajax Cape Town, which left the Tshwane giants with an unassailable lead at the top of the table heading into the final round of league fixtures, on May 12.
It was by no means a walkthrough for Sundowns as, with two-thirds of the season gone, they were still being pushed for the title by the likes of Kaizer Chiefs, Maritzburg United and Orlando Pirates, although only the Buccaneers were able to sustain a challenge until the penultimate round.
Kekana has since applauded the improved level of competition in South African football and credits the coaches for the upturn in quality.
"We knew very well it wasn't going to be easy for us to win the league, if you see how our [domesstic] football has grown, every team is pulling towards one direction, which is to be competitive," the midfield maestro told SuperSport TV.
"We're happy as South African footballers to see our country doing so well and our coaches are also trying to push us to be the best and I'm happy to be the champion again."
He continued: "It's a very special moment for us because we've been sacrificing a lot and I remember the last games that we played, it wasn't our easiest matches but we tried so hard, we tried to put ourselves together because it was a long season, to be honest, and we should be happy with our work."
Sundowns will get the chance for a victory lap on the final day of the league season when they head to the Dr Molemela Stadium to face top-eight chasing Bloemfontein Celtic.
