Sundowns Defender Back In Training, Return To Squad Beckons

Mamelodi Sundowns Defender Back In Training, Return To Squad Beckons

By Soccer Laduma - Jun 19, 2017 01:52 PM

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed that Wayne Arendse is back in full training following an ankle injury he sustained in March this year.

The 32-year-old who recently put pen to paper on a new contract with Masandawana made his last appearance for Head Coach, Pitso Mosimane, in a 2-0 win over Mariveni United in the Nedbank Cup competition on March, 06.

The club has since confirmed on their official Twitter account that the centre back underwent his first full training session last week, June 14.

Sundowns are currently in Tunisia, where they are gearing up for their upcoming CAF Champions League group fixture against Esperance Tunis.

The Brazilians suffered a home soil 2-1 loss to the Tunisians on June 02,  where they dropped to third place on the group standings.

Head Coach Mosimane’s side will lock horns with Esperance once again on Wednesday, June 21, where a win will strengthen Sundowns’ chances of reclaiming their spot in the top two of the group standings.

Mosimane will want to have most of his key players at his disposal when the team faces the Tunisian side and it remains to be seen whether Arendse will be fit enough for selection come Wednesday.

Good for the team, although I'm disappointed by the tweet as Wayne is a center back not a full back

“Look, we are here to win. We have to win to get to the summit of our log. We are not here to draw,” the Liberian said in an interview at the weekend on arrival. The sides meet on Wednesday, and the return of Laffor to the side is a welcome development. “I watched our game against them in Atteridgeville. They are technically well structured, but we are confident that we can break through. This was clear from the number of chances we had, so we hope that on Wednesday we will use the opportunities,” Laffor said. He does not believe Esperance are extraordinary, but they will take the game respecting them. Sundowns are currently third on the log following their loss and the draw against St George, who they next meet away. Sundowns took on Esperance with a host of injured players on the stand. “But we have a big enough squad, and we certainly do not want to be knocked out so early in the campaign. In football, there are bound to be injuries, so this should not be an excuse.” “I am happy to be back and fit. I am ready to play. I have achieved a great deal with Sundowns, but there is still much to achieve. I am still not satisfied with my achievements so far.” “For now, our focus is on Wednesday’s game, and then we will look at the next game.” Sundowns will still be without talisman Khama Billiat, but Wayne Arendse and Motjeka Madisha were back in training following injuries which impacted heavily on the team’s defensive capabilities. But inspirational captain Hlompho Kekana will be back to patch up the midfield and assist in attack, and also back is Tiyani “Sugar” Mabunda, who has had some game time with Bafana Bafana together with Tebogo Langerman, Themba Zwane and Percy Tau.
