Free State Stars will face Kaizer Chiefs in the Maize Cup final after they defeated Chippa United 3-1 on penalties on Saturday afternoon.
The game got off to a somewhat slow start as both sides looked to find their rhythm in the opening stages.
The first chance arrived after 15 minutes, with Chippa's Frederic Nsabiyumva steering his header onto the upright before Rooi Mahamutsa managed to clear on the rebound.
The tempo of the clash dropped quite a bit after the 25 minute mark as both sides struggled with their decision-making in the final third.
Stars had to wait until the 40th minute for their first clear-cut opening although they were let down by poor finishing as Sinethemba Jantjie failed to convert from point-blank range at the far post.
The second half started in the same fashion as the first, with both sides struggling to carve out clear-cut chances.
As a result, Chippa coach Dan Malesela opted to introduce new signing Daine Klate for Kabelo Seakanyen on the hour mark.
Unfortunately, the second half proved to be a stop-start affair , with numerous and substitutions disrupting the flow of the encounter.
Klate went agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 78th minute when he rattled the crossbar with goalkeeper Badra Sangare well beaten.
However, neither side could find a winning goal in the remaining stages of the second half, forcing the clash into a penalty shoot-out.
