Da Gama: We Ran Chiefs Off The Park

Sekhukhune United co-coach Owen Da Gama was proud of the players' effort against Kaizer Chiefs and feels they played some great football.

Sekhukhune extended their winless run to 10 matches in the DStv Premiership after the 1-0 defeat to the Soweto giants in their final home game of the season.

“Look, the first goal was a mistake. A defensive mistake unfortunately. But you know I’m so proud of the boys to come in the second half and run Chiefs off the park was for me very pleasing because it just showed that the boys wanted it,” Da Gama told SuperSport after the game.

“We had such a lot of bodies and most of the second half was played in their half. I thought first half, we were structurally very good but we didn’t penetrate as much but I thought second half we were just unfortunate not to get that goal or two.

“Ja, look we created a couple (of chances) through that. But I was just happy with the pressure we put on them and it was just that final ball and I was happy how we played the ball around."

The former Highlands Park tactician was also delighted with some of the football that was on display.

“We played some great football which was pleasing to the eye and it’s something we want to build on. That’s how we want to play. We want to keep possession. We want to get bodies in the final third for us that’s the way forward.

“I thought one or two players were a bit anxious you know. Once you get into the final third that’s where you must be very, very calm and try and look for opportunities and take on people because anything can happen when you take on people.

“Penalties, set-pieces anything can happen. But as I’m saying it is work in progress but the way Sekhukhune played today in the second half, I’m proud, I’m really very really proud,” he said.
