Memela: That’s Why It Didn’t Take Me Long...

Luvuyo ‘Amigo’ Memela has spoken about his shock departure from Orlando Pirates to join AmaZulu.

Last Thursday, Pirates confirmed on the club’s official website that they were still in talks with Memela about extending his stay at the Soweto giants.

However, the 33-year-old was unveiled as a new signing for AmaZulu on Monday after the Siya crew earlier reported that he had stopped training at the Buccaneers.

“AmaZulu want to achieve things and we all know that AmaZulu have been there in the PSL for a long time and I’m very happy to be here. Also, the ambition that the chairman has also motivated me and that’s why it didn’t take me long to join the team,” said Memela, speaking to the media this week.

In his first match for his new team, Memela is likely to come up against his former teammates as Usuthu prepare for the clash against Bucs in their first 2020/21 DStv Premiership season fixture on Saturday.

“When you are a player and you want to achieve things what is important is that as much as you will be playing the next game, what’s important is about the team going forward. To be honest, the ambitions that the team has is not only to play one game but for the team to finish the season on top,” he said.

About reuniting with his former Pirates teammate Augustine Mulenga at the Durban-based side, Memela said, “It’s always a bonus when you come to a team and you find (your former teammate there), Mulenga has signed and is here as well. I didn’t know that he was here as well, so it’s good. But at the same time what’s important is that you need to learn the culture of the team and understand the other players as well because at the end of the day it’s all about the team and not the individuals. But I am happy that he is here.”
