Confirmed: Top-Flight Coach Resigns, Takes Job In Europe

A day after Premier Soccer League chairman Irvin Khoza confirmed the resumption date for the balance of the 2019/20 season, one of the top flight clubs will have to conclude the campaign without their head coach.

Alan Clark has confirmed to the Siya crew that he has “signed for a club in Europe that is fighting for an opportunity to play in the Champions League or Europa League” and as a result he has resigned “with immediate effect”.

Leopards are bottom of the Absa Premiership table and were gearing towards the fight of their lives next week to survive dropping down to the second tier of SA football with six matches left and now that dogfight just got tougher.

“I have an offer and I will now have a contract with another club overseas in Europe. I have signed for a club that is fighting for an opportunity to play in the Champions League or the Europa League, my whole family will be immigrating,” Clark explained.

“It’s a good opportunity and I can’t think of many SA coaches who have had this opportunity to work in Europe and I want to be part of that. I want to do something people can be proud of. I didn’t want to leave Leopards, but it is what it is. I am grateful to the chairman (David Thidiela) and what they have done for me. I tried to steady the ship and I think I did that, especially for a young and inexperienced coach.”

Clark, who would not reveal where in Europe he is going, took over the reins sometime in January following the suspension of Cavin Johnson, the two having worked together at AmaZulu previously.

David Thidiela, the Leopards chairman, sounded surprised when contacted by the Siya crew and said he would rather not be drawn into making a comment.
