In our regular legends feature ‘Legends Have Their Say’ Bucs legend Helman ‘The Mid-Night Express’ Mkhalele has offered insight on the lack of South quality South African strikers in the PSL.
In his heyday The Mid-Night Express was known for his pace and attacking prowess on the right flanks of Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana, delivering accurate crosses for the likes of Shaun Bartlett, Mark Williams and Philemon Masinga to profit from.
Speaking to Soccer Laduma Mkhalele addressed the issue facing Orlando Pirates striking woes.
“One thing we need to remember is that strikers play in combination with midfielders and the success of either depends on how well both play together. If you have a midfielder who doesn’t understand the kind of striker he is playing with, then he will make the striker look bad,” explained Mkhalele.
“When you watch Pirates play you seldom see combination goals. The goals are more a result of players reacting to situations rather than anticipating them. If players invested time into understanding each other I believe the goal ratio would improve,” concluded the Bucs legend.
The highest goal scorer at Pirates since the inception of the Premiership League is Benedict ‘Tso’ Vilakazi with 52 league goals and 58 goals in all competitions during his eight year career with the Buccaneers.
