Latest On Igesund And Serero

The Siya crew can confirm that a three-way conference call between Ajax Amsterdam midfielder, Thulani Serero, his manager/agent Mike Ntombela and Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund took place recently.

The call was as a result of what happened when Serero refused to play against Botswana in the last game of the 2014 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, saying he was injured. Igesund and his technical team disputed Serero’s injury claims, saying he was saving himself for Ajax’s Champions League match against Barcelona a few days later.

According to our sources, during the telephone conversation, Serero made it clear to Igesund that he definitely wants to play for Bafana again, but that he’s just recovered from injury and needs time to cement his place in the Ajax team before playing making his return to Bafana. He felt that he is not ready to return to Bafana just yet, but stressed that he really wants to play for Bafana again.

The Siya crew put a call through to Ntombela, who confirmed the story. “Yes, your information is correct, the conversation did take place. I facilitated the three-way conversation because Thulani wants to play for the country again. It is just that he wants to cement his place at club level at the moment and he also feels that he is not ready right now to play for Bafana. The coach understood the situation, so everything is now fine between the player and the coach.”

Igesund also confirmed the story and Ntombela’s statement. “All is sorted out amicably and I understand Thulani’s situation. He’s got to consolidate his position at Ajax as their number 10 and it is important that he does. It is also in Bafana Bafana’s interest as well. The past is in the past and the young boy has a big role to play for Bafana in future. I want him to do well for both Ajax and Bafana.”

Bafana take on Swaziland and world champions Spain in international friendlies later this month, and Igesund will be announcing his squad for the Swaziland game on Monday, and the squad for Spain on Wednesday or Thursday.
