Maritzburg United head coach Clinton Larsen says a match official informed there were three handballs in the box during their loss to Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Chilli Boys failed to ease their relegation concerns after going down 3-2 to Sundowns on Tuesday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld.
“Close but not close enough for me. What was disappointing, I was just told by one of the match officials that there were three handballs inside the box but none of them warranted a penalty so that’s disappointing," Larsen told SuperSport after the game.
“I suppose sometimes you get them and sometimes you don’t. But then again taking into consideration how depleted the squad is I think it was a good effort from everybody.
“We left it a little bit late, too much to do in the end. But I think we lost to a quality team today, you know especially when they went into the lead they showed their quality."
With only three matches to go, Larsen credited the effort of his charges who are putting in the hard shifts week in and week out.
“I’m proud of the boys yet again. We have a 19 man squad and three goalkeepers and these players are putting their bodies on the line week in and week out.\
“So it wasn’t easy today, we got three important games left and we’ll keep soldiering on,” he said.
