Larsen Explains The Key To Beating Chiefs

Larsen Explains The Key To Beating Chiefs

By Soccer Laduma - Apr 24, 2018 10:13 PM

Golden Arrows coach Clinton Larsen says they took advantage of the width of the pitch to beat Kaizer Chiefs on Tuesday night.

A fourth-minute goal from Lerato Lamola set the trend for the game, which eventually ended with Arrows beating Amakhosi 3-1 in an Absa Premiership match at the Princess Magogo Stadium.

Larsen, though, did lament his side’s inability to listen to his instructions after going in front, but admitted to giving the boys a talking to at half-time in order to solve the obstacles in their way.

In the end, the Arrows coach was proud of his team’s showing on the night and believes they deserved the three points, which leaves them just outside of the top-eight with two games remaining.

“I think we started the game very well and were on the front foot from the first whistle,” Larsen told SuperSport after the game.

“We got the early goal which we wanted to do and I thought it was a foul by (Willard) Katsande that led to their goal, but these things happen.

“After they equalised we said to the players ‘be a little more patient, stretch the field and use the width to really stretch Chiefs’, but we never really did that. We allowed them back into the game, but at half-time we sorted that out with a lot more width and I thought we deserved the three points today.

“Right towards the end it was disappointing with the amount of possession we gave away, a lot of individualism coming out instead of playing for the team, players were playing for themselves and I wasn’t very happy about.

“It was a big performance, a big three points from the boys today, even with a man extra this is not an easy team to play against.

“They gave a real good account of themselves with one man down, but I thought we deserved the points today.”

Despite the comfortable win on the night, Larsen still bemoaned his side’s inability to take their chances in front of goal, but these are the things they will learn from for next season.

“We knew when we went into the lead that it was going to open up. We threw caution to the wind and I counted at least eight opportunities on the break that we could have scored, but I said it a long time ago, this has been our Achilles hill from the beginning of the season, that decision making that we keep speaking about as coaches,” added Larsen.

“I keep saying we have a young team and we have to live with these mistakes.”

@DopeZN The beauty of sport is everything can be turned around. We MUST NOT rush the appointment of a new head coach. Then he must be given enough time to succeed........BUT not too much time like SK!

For now beating Chiefs is no longer an achievement simply because we've turned to an under-average mediocre of a club. K4L
