Komphela Reveals Innovative Training Methods

Golden Arrows coach Steve Komphela has discussed how he and his team are adapting to life’s new normal with football currently halted by COVID-19.

The Absa Premiership outfit was last in action on March 3 when they were held to a goalless draw by Orlando Pirates at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium and were in seventh position with seven matches remaining before the league was suspended.

But Komphela has revealed how the squad has kept in touch, even though it’s just not the same and having to use technology to stay fit.

“We do virtual training and once in a while we connect with the players. We try and see if they are maintaining the sessions. Then myself, Mandla (Ncikazi), the fitness and goalkeeper coach monitor them on screen,” said Komphela.

“We gave them programmes and once in a while we do video training – to hold them accountable. From a mental and chemistry point of view, this is important because football is about having that team spirit and team work. You can’t build the camaraderie when you are isolated. You can hear when they greet each other via the video screening that the vibe is there. From a technical point of view there is very little we can do. But all that you do is more physical and mental.”

It's far from clear when football will resume, with the PSL following government guidelines regarding the pandemic to determine their next move.

Komphela said he was already thinking ahead as the likelihood is that there won’t be much of a break between the restart of the 2019/20 season and the one after it.

“We are starting to be creative and maybe we might come up with a very compressed programme. But the challenge is that the adaptation and reaction of the body won’t be natural, and nature takes its course, it doesn’t rush things. If we compress, we also need to take care of the injuries we might suffer. We are going to come up with a combo programme, but we must be careful it doesn’t get players injured,” the coach explained.
