Kaizer Chiefs have announced Itumeleng Khune as their new captain for the 2016/17 PSL season. The goalkeeper takes over from Siphiwe Tshabalala, who wore the captain's armband last season.
Khune started the 2014/15 season as the captain, but after being sidelined by an injury, Tefu Mashamaite took over the captaincy until the end of the season. The Soweto giants clinched a league and cup double that season, with Mashamaite as the capatin and Stuart Baxter at the helm.
However, Mashamaite parted ways with the club at the end of the 2014/15 PSL season, and with Khune’s contract dispute with the club, Tshabalala was subsequently appointed the captain for the 2015/16 season under head coach Steve Komphela.
The Siya crew broke the news last season that there were indications that Tshabalala would not captain Komphela’s side for the 2016/17 campaign.
Chiefs have now confirmed the news and revealed that Khune will be the Amakhosi’s new leader for the upcoming season.
