Konco Explains Sad Celtic Departure

Former Bloemfontein Celtic CEO Khumbulani Konco has explained why he parted ways with the club after 20 years of service.

Konco first joined the Mangaung outfit as a player, before moving up the ranks to team manager, chief operations officer, and more recently CEO, a position he held until Monday 15 March 2021.

After news broke in local media, it was reported that Konco was retrenched by the club, following a section 189 process, which came after he served a suspension following a verbal spat with the club’s chairman, Max Tshabalala.

Now, in a press conference with the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA)  Konco has clarified his reasons for parting ways with the club he had served diligently for almost 20 years.

“It is with great regret that I would call you today to announce my departure from Bloemfontein Celtic. One would ask why the announcement. It is due to the respect and the companion that I have with the media,” he told SAFJA.

Konco questioned the retrenchment process after he was the only casualty at the club despite seven other candidates being part of the entire process.

“What came out in the meeting is that the process came because of the challenges facing the club, of which they are well-documented, but when you look at the process and the end process, and what we know with regards to the retrenchment process, one can feel that the axe was looking at someone and only that person and the reason I say that is because in the consultation, some suggestions were given out and none were implemented and the letter came on the 15th of March that said you are retrenched and it was only me at that time,” he explained.

Konco has not yet announced his next move but denied rumours that he is heading to AmaZulu.

“Remember this whole thing came to me as a shock I didn’t see it coming I need to be honest. I’ll have to sit down and consult before making my next move, but football is my life and one would always like to be in the football industry,” he added.
