Bafana Bafana captain Bongani Khumalo has thanked the nation for their support during the team’s participation in the on-going 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, being hosted in South Africa.
The Greece-based defender acknowledges that the team and the nation are heartbroken following Bafana’s elimination from the continental showpiece, after the side lost in a penalty shoot-out to Mali in the quarter-finals over the weekend.
Khumalo says that the entire nation was behind the team, and he thanked the country for their support. Looking forward, the defender added that they will now aim to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
“Everyone was behind the team. Every South African wanted the team to win and that kept us going. We wanted to lift the trophy for them but you know in penalties everyone can win the game.
“It was unfortunate we were knocked out but the country showed the belief in us and that's the most important thing as this is the national team.
“We will continue working hard as a team as there are more important games in the 2014 World Cup qualifiers coming. We still need the nation's support," Khumalo concluded.
