Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has hinted that he may rest two of his key midfielder strongmen when the Brazilians host Chippa United in today’s afternoon kick-off at Loftus Versfeld Stadium.
Downs are still playing catch-up in their Absa Premiership schedule and have a massive CAF Champions League semi-final first leg away to Wydad Casablanca in Morocco on Friday – so captain Hlompho Kekana and Tiyani Mabunda could be rested ahead of the trip to Rabat.
Kekana is the player most likely to sit out after he had to leave the pitch on a stretcher following Downs’ 2-1 win over Baroka FC at the weekend. He was stamped on his ankle by Rodwell Chinyengetere, who was subsequently sent off by referee Victor Hlungwani for the reckless challenge. The club also confirmed on their website this morning that Mabunda is nursing a knock on his left thigh.
“We need Kekana and ‘Suga’ (Mabunda) in Rabat, you know I can’t take chances. We have to be careful with the loading of players,” Mosimane told the media.
The Brazilians will host Chippa in an unusual afternoon kick-off as they attempt to close the gap on log leaders Orlando Pirates before jetting off to Morocco this week for the first leg three days later.
