Darren Keet will play in the DStv Premiership next season, his agent has confirmed.
The 31-year-old Bafana Bafana goalkeeper returned to South Africa in October last year having parted ways with OH Leuven in Belgium.
He’d attracted interest in the USA’s Major League Soccer, but due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, Keet was unable to make the switch and signed a short-term deal with Cape United in the GladAfrica Championship instead.
Now, the Siya crew has it on good authority that the keeper is expected to join Cape Town City next season – taking over from Peter Leeuwenburgh, who is leaving the Citizens to join FC Groening in his native Holland.
“I can confirm Darren will be playing in the PSL top-flight next season. Darren’s goal is to be part of the Bafana Bafana team under new coach Hugo Broos,” said Shawn Bester, the players’ agent, without giving much else away.
“Keet is completing the NFD season with Roger da Sa and it has been good for him to train and play so that he remains at a match fitness level.”
There was talk upon his return to the country that Keet could reunite with Gavin Hunt at Kaizer Chiefs with the two having worked together at Bidvest Wits before the goalie moved to Belgium at the end of the 2018/19 season.
Siya sources at Amakhosi informed the crew that it was unlikely he would sign for Chiefs given that Keet actually snubbed the club in favour of going back to Europe two years ago.
Indications are that he has agreed a deal in principle to join City.
