Amakhosi Starlet On COSAFA, Bafana & Playing With Rivals

Wiseman Meyiwa has had a solid breakthrough season in 2017/18, making his Kaizer Chiefs debut, scoring on it, and then going on to represent his country at senior level.

Now, with the 18-year-old hoping for even more game-time with the Amakhosi, he will be looking to use his experience with Bafana Bafana to propel him onto even bigger things.

Meyiwa played two games under Stuart Baxter earlier this month as Bafana won the plate final of the COSAFA Cup, however, were unable to win the actual tournament having lost the first game via a penalty shootout to Madagascar.

Speaking to the club’s official website after the competition, he said, “I played two matches and I am grateful to the coaching staff at Bafana Bafana. I am happy to have gotten game-time, but at the same time disappointed not have properly won the Cosafa Cup.

“Luck was not on our side. We tried our best and we will take the positives and move forward.”

Regardless of the results though, the young midfielder enjoyed himself in camp, playing alongside domestic rivals from the likes of Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.

He added, “The Bafana camp was great because we gelled as a team and the spirit was great. Most of us played together from the junior levels. For example, I played with Lyle Foster and Khulekani Kubheka from the U17s upwards. It is great to see us slowly graduating to the senior levels. Youth must take this as an encouragement to reach for their dreams.”

Meyiwa played 14 Absa Premiership games for Chiefs this season and will be eager to make more of a mark in 2018/19 under whoever takes over as Steve Komphela’s successor.
