Chiefs v Downs – The Battle For Top Spot Continues
Kaizer Chiefs v Mamelodi Sundowns Should Be A Tight Affair
Kaizer Chiefs host Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend in a game of immense proportions with regards to the title race, but recent form shows that there isn’t a clear favourite.
Masandawana may be top of the Absa Premiership at present with a four-point lead of Cape Town City, but their last two clashes with the Amakhosi have ended in defeat for Pitso Mosimane’s side.
Steve Komphela knows that Sundowns aren’t uncatchable given their five-point lead over them, with another Chiefs win shortening the gap substantially as the final third of the season approaches.
While Chiefs have the upper hand of late, looking back over the last 10 meetings between the sides it shows that they are on a pretty even keel between them.
With four wins each and two draws since the start of the 2013/14 season, it appears that the two have been difficult to separate, although Sundowns did win the most important game in recent years – the 2015 Telkom Knockout final.
Neither side was able to clinch the Absa Premiership title last year as it fell into the hands of Bidvest Wits, but with the Clever Boys already out of this year’s race for the league trophy, Mosimane and Komphela have hopes of getting their hands on it.
Over the past 10 matches, Chiefs have scored 10 goals compared to Sundowns’ 12, and good news for fans is that there have been just two 0-0 draws in this encounter over the past decade.
