Chiefs v Downs – The Battle For Top Spot Continues

Kaizer Chiefs v Mamelodi Sundowns Should Be A Tight Affair

By Soccer Laduma - Jan 23, 2018 01:32 PM
Kaizer Chiefs host Mamelodi Sundowns this weekend in a game of immense proportions with regards to the title race, but recent form shows that there isn’t a clear favourite.

Masandawana may be top of the Absa Premiership at present with a four-point lead of Cape Town City, but their last two clashes with the Amakhosi have ended in defeat for Pitso Mosimane’s side.

Steve Komphela knows that Sundowns aren’t uncatchable given their five-point lead over them, with another Chiefs win shortening the gap substantially as the final third of the season approaches.

While Chiefs have the upper hand of late, looking back over the last 10 meetings between the sides it shows that they are on a pretty even keel between them.

With four wins each and two draws since the start of the 2013/14 season, it appears that the two have been difficult to separate, although Sundowns did win the most important game in recent years – the 2015 Telkom Knockout final.

Neither side was able to clinch the Absa Premiership title last year as it fell into the hands of Bidvest Wits, but with the Clever Boys already out of this year’s race for the league trophy, Mosimane and Komphela have hopes of getting their hands on it.

Over the past 10 matches, Chiefs have scored 10 goals compared to Sundowns’ 12, and good news for fans is that there have been just two 0-0 draws in this encounter over the past decade.

Nonetheless, with revenge seemingly on the cards for the Tshwane giants, the 53-year-old has already begun playing mind games with the opposition, choosing to downplay his side’s chances against the Glamour Boys. "I wish I could play these big games with a fully fit team and compete fairly‚" Mosimane said to The Great Khosiological

Mosimane further explained that Sundowns need to box smart against an organised Chiefs outfit, and cannot afford to play into play into their hands by leaving themselves vulnerable to the counterattack. "We need to be smart against Chiefs,” he explained. "Not be all over the place. We know how they play," Mosimane addded. "We must also avoid playing into their hands because we are playing away and somebody must attack," he concluded.

“Yes, I’m scared!” Mosimane responded when asked if he scared of Amakhosi.

Zebras are nothing - they are relying on our own former players. ZASTRO will be marked out of the game & Downs will beat ZEBRAS mercilessly.
