Amakhosi Assistant’s Malawi Job Confirmed
Kaizer Chiefs' Patrick Mabedi Has Been Confirmed With Malawi
Patrick Mabedi has been confirmed as a new assistant coach at Malawi’s national team, which could suggest that – with Steve Komphela’s future in doubt – he’s keeping his options open.
Mabedi was brought in last year to replace John Paintsil when the Ghanaian left the Amakhosi, signing a two-year deal with the club until the end of next season, although things could change if Komphela ends up leaving.
The Siya crew contacted the Malawian FA who explained that the 44-year-old would be joining Ronny Van Geneugden, but insisted that it is not on a full-time basis.
They told the crew, “Yes, Patrick has been appointed as assistant coach and will be joining the National team during matches on FIFA dates as well as during engagements in the off-season.”
Komphela will see his three-year contract with the Glamour Boys expire at the end of the current season, and unless he can conjure up a Nedbank Cup victory then it seems likely that he will be on his way out after three trophyless years.
Mabedi’s future at Chiefs may not be linked with Komphela’s but a foot in the door with the Football Association of Malawi isn’t a bad thing to have for him.
