How Chiefs Can Secure Prized CAF Spot
Kaizer Chiefs May Not Even Need To Win To Secure A CAF Spot
Kaizer Chiefs know that victory over Ajax Cape Town this weekend will see them clinch a return to the CAF competition, but even defeat could be enough if other results go their way.
The Amakhosi haven’t played in either the CAF Champions League or CAF Confederation Cup since being knocked out of the CCL by ASEC Mimosas back in March 2016, and their players and head coach, Patrick Mabedi, have voiced their hopes of returning to continental action.
Chiefs’ recent victory over fellow CAF hopefuls, Maritzburg United, put them in the driving seat for third place, however, they need to win on Saturday to guarantee that they qualify, with a draw or defeat giving Maritzburg the chance to leapfrog them.
Currently, two points separate Chiefs from the Team of Choice, and with Fadlu Davids’ side hoping to end the season with a victory over Golden Arrows, they do still have a chance of making the leap.
Should Maritzburg draw or lose then Mabedi’s boys don’t need any points in order to secure a CCC spot, but if the Pietermaritzburg-based outfit picks up three points then Chiefs’ vastly inferior goal difference means that only a win will do.
Do you think Chiefs can secure their place in next season’s CCC?
