Although there has been disappointment from Kaizer Chiefs' fans about Daniel Akpeyi’s performance from the team's previous match, the former Chippa United goalkeeper is likely to start again for the Soweto giants in their next match.
Amakhosi will be in serious need of a win this coming weekend, after failing to secure the three points from all three of their previous league matches against Cape Town City, Orlando Pirates and Polokwane City respectively.
Ernst Middendorp’s side will take on Highlands Park at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in their upcoming match on Saturday.
Akpeyi was criticised for the goal he conceded against Rise and Shine, as Chiefs drew 1-1 with the Limpopo outfit last weekend and dented their chances of winning the Absa Premiership title.
However, the Nigerian international is likely to be handed another start for the Chiefs against the Lions of the North, according to what the club’s head coach has told the media this week about his chances.
Former Chiefs midfielder, Junior Khanye, believes that either Thela Ngobeni or Ronwen Williams should have been signed by the Soweto giants when the club was in search of a goalkeeper in January.
“Chiefs’ goalkeepers (Virgil Vries and Akpeyi) have been shocking and I don’t understand why they (the club) didn’t do everything to sign Thela Ngobeni. They should have tried by all means to sign Thela Ngobeni or Ronwen Williams. They should have bought one of those two goalkeepers. Chiefs have got money and could have afforded to buy any one of those two goalkeepers. Thela grew up in front of me at Chiefs’ development and I know how capable he is. He would have solved the goalkeeping problem at Chiefs,” said Khanye.
