CAF Champions League Explained

This coming weekend, Kaizer Chiefs take on Mozambican side, Liga Muculmana, in the first round of the CAF Champions League as they look to take one step closer to the group stages.

Stuart Baxter’s side comfortably booked their place in the first round after a preliminary round victory over Namibia’s Black Africa, and have to come out on top in two more ties if they’re to make the group stages.

Chiefs have two legs against Muculmana to get through, starting this weekend, and will then face either AS Vita of the Democratic Republic of Congo, or Zimbabwe’s Dynamos, also over two legs.

The second leg of the tie against Muculmana takes place a week on Saturday, while the second round ties goes ahead in the final two weekends of March.

Only by winning those two ties will the Amakhosi make it into the group stages of the 2014 CAF Champions League when they, and seven other teams, will battle it out for a place in the competition’s semifinals.

Should Baxter’s side make it to the group stages, then they will have a break from continental competition until mid-May when the first group games take place.

However, if Chiefs get past Muculmana but lose in the second round of the tournament then they will automatically be entered into the play-off round of the 2014 CAF Confederations Cup in April.

Simply put, if the Amakhosi can win four more games then they’ll secure their place in the CCL group stages, consequently guaranteeing South Africa at least one point in the CAF five-year rankings, and themselves at least R4,000,000.
