Since the start of the 2016/17 season, Chiefs have announced the promotion of 10 players – including Mashiane – from their development, namely Khotso Malope, Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya, Yusuf Bunting, Wiseman Meyiwa, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Emmanuel Letlotlo, Bruce Bvuma, Siyabonga Ngezana and Brylon Petersen.
Of the 10, all but Bunting, Ngcobo and Petersen have gone on to play at least once in the Absa Premiership for the Glamour Boys, though at present just Ntiya-Ntiya is playing regular football under Ernst Middendorp.
While Bunting, Ngcobo and Petersen haven’t played at all yet, Malope has made seven appearances in the league, Bvuma was the third-choice goalkeeper until Itumeleng Khune’s injury, and Ngezana fell out of favour recently despite being used as a substitute against Cape Town City last night.
Meyiwa got unlucky after a car accident meant that he will out of action for a while, and Letlotlo went out on an unsuccessful loan to Baroka after a long-term injury. Mashiane will be hoping to buck the trend and command a regular place in the side.
Of all the players that the club has brought into the first team in recent years, only Ngezana (27 in two seasons) has managed to play more than 15 Absa Premiership matches for the Glamour Boys, though Ntiya-Ntiya could well join that list as the season progresses.
