Chiefs Boss Lauds 'Historical' Shell Ultra Cup
Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung Lauds 'Historical' Shell Helix Ultra Cup
Kaizer Chiefs football manager Bobby Motaung has hailed the introduction of the "historical" Shell Helix Ultra Cup after the pre-season tournament was announced last week.
The Carling Black Label Cup has long stood as the premier pre-season competition in South Africa, where Amakhosi battle bitter rivals Orlando Pirates on an annual basis in a mega-money friendly, where fans get to vote for the respective starting XIs and substitutes.
However, Shell and Mamelodi Sundowns have now looked to break that monopoly following the formation of the Shell Cup, with the inaugural match taking place at FNB Stadium on 21 July 2018, where Kaizer Chiefs take on the reigning Absa Premiership champions.
Motaung has applauded the decision to launch the tournament, as well as the impact it can have for both teams when it comes to preparing for the new season, given the level of competition provided in such an encounter.
"It's historical," Motaung told the media. "It's historical for Shell to be, (for) the first time, involved in football, and also for us (Chiefs), to be playing a tournament with Sundowns, our own tournament with Sundowns, it's historical.
"And I want to thank both the president of Sundowns (Patrice Motsepe) and the chairman of Kaizer Chiefs (Kaizer Motaung) for allowing this to prevail.
"I think it's good for both clubs as we all know that this time around we also need to come back with a bang, come back with a strong character in the league, so this type of a game will help us boost our confidence coming into the league and show what we are made of for the next season."
