How Sundowns Can Boot Chiefs Out Of The Title Race…
Mamelodi Sundowns can officially end Kaizer Chiefs’ slim hopes of lifting the Absa Premiership title this weekend, regardless of how the Amakhosi do against Platinum Stars.
Chiefs’ head coach, Steve Komphela, has repeatedly stated that he will not be giving up on the league title until it is mathematically impossible for them to leapfrog the current leaders, but that fat lady he’s spoken about could start to sing this weekend.
The Amakhosi have 12 points left to play for before their 2017/18 season comes to an end, and are currently 10 points behind Masandawana at the top of the table. Even if Chiefs win this weekend, should Sundowns get all three points against Bidvest Wits, then it will officially be a two-horse race between them and Orlando Pirates.
Meanwhile, Chiefs are also on the verge of picking up their lowest points tally in a decade. The maximum points that they can achieve is 51 – which is one better than last season – although if they pick up less than four more points then it will be their worst league campaign since before the 2007/08 season that saw them finish sixth.
Sundowns already have one hand on the trophy going into their last five games, but Pirates will be keen to try and keep up the pressure on them as they maintain a hope of overturning their current lead of four points.
Chiefs, however, could be out of the running even before they take on Dikwena tomorrow.
