Tembo: Where The Wheels Came Off…

SuperSport had a front row seat to witness Mamelodi Sundowns capture the inaugural DStv Premiership - their fourth league title in succession, after they were ousted 3-1 by their cross-town rivals at the Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Wednesday.

Despite their positive start to the season, SuperSport United have once again fell short when it comes to competing for league honours and now their coach Kaitano Tembo has revealed where it all fell apart for Matsatsantsa.

It was their Tshwane rivals Sundowns who were ultimately crowned as champions, but SuperSport had showed great impetus and appeared to be serious title contenders at the start of the campaign, but as it has in the last few seasons, came falling apart at the end.

Asked where he thought his side fell short this season, coach Tembo lamented the injuries to some of the influential but highlighted the blessing in disguise that saw the club’s youngsters stake their claim this campaign.

“I think we started the season very well, because if you look at the makeup of our team, we don’t have a lot of depth and quality in terms of depth as well. We lost quite a number of influential players in terms of injuries like Bradley Grobler, (Thamsanqa) Gabuza, he’s only coming back now, it was his first start after three months. Jones Lungu was injured as well, even Giully Manziba, so it was a little bit difficult and we had to play younger players and I think that is when you see the emergence of Jesse Donn playing more regularly, and also the young Keenan Phillips playing more regularly so that kinda put us on the back foot in terms of consistency, but I’m quite happy with where were going because we’ve given opportunities to other players and some players have grabbed their opportunities and we are looking forward to next season,” the coach explained.

SuperSport have two more fixtures in the form of Maritzburg United and Chippa United respectively as they look to close out their season on a high.
