Jordaan's Hint On Igesund's Future

After Bafana Bafana crashed out of the Chan to Nigeria, serious questions have been raised about the future of coach, Gordon Igesund. While for many the national team have overachieved and made progress during his time in charge, others are more hardline about the fact he has not achieved his mandates.

Igesund was mandated to reach the semi-finals of the 2013 Afcon - Bafana got to the second round but went out unluckily due to penalties. He was also mandated to get the team to the 2014 World Cup - he failed to do so after winning three out of four qualifying matches. Arguably, the four points dropped when Pitso Mosimane was in charge cost the current coach.

Those points were dropped in winnable home matches against minnows, Ethiopia and Botswana. If Bafana had picked up at least a win and a draw in these two games, South Africa would've qualified based on Igesund's results.

Nonetheless, someone who may have a major influence in deciding on Igesund's fate is Safa President, Danny Jordaan. While he was careful to say a decision would only be reached after he had heard the arguments of everyone at Safa and the technical team, he did give a hint that Igesund had perhaps done enough to stay based on his results.

In a very open interview in edition 856 of today's (January 26) Soccer-Laduma he said, "We did beat Spain. But that team had the best available and the Chan team did not. Therefore we must not say Bafana are the worst team in the world. They're not! We are number 10 in Africa and have jumped 11 places. We're also 52 on the Fifa rankings. So, the team that has made progress is not this Chan team. It's the other one. We must keep the balance sometimes."
