Cosmos Legends Speak Out After Relegation

A few Jomo Cosmos legends have spoken out about what they feel are the reasons for the club's most recent demise, which will see them playing football at an amateur level.

Cosmos were relegated from the GladAfrica Championship over the weekend, ending an incredible era in professional football for a club that has launched the careers of so many players in the PSL.

For many years there have been calls for Jomo Sono to vacate the head coaching seat to bring in someone else with fresh ideas, but the 'Black Prince' has held onto the position to a point where the club is now preparing for life in the amateur ranks.

There are a few legends of the club who have opened up about the situation, giving different reasons for what has led to the club's demise.

"It's very sad that Cosmos has been relegated. You know that Jomo Cosmos is a big brand in Africa. Most of the players that have played for him ended up playing in many countries overseas. It's difficult to accept it, but we need to move on," former lethal striker Esau Kanyenda said to the Siya crew.

"You could see in the last five years that Jomo has been there, but he is not really active like the way he was, because I know Jomo used to go to countries looking for players. For the last five years, I don't think he has been doing that and I think that's what made the team be where it is. If it was the Jomo of old of going out to look for players, he could have got players like Benjani (Mwaruwari), Tico Tico (Bucuane), Nkosinathi Nhleko, (Reneilwe) Letsholonyane."

Former Ezenkosi defender Edward 'Magents' Motale had his say on the club's relegation.

"It's obviously something very sad. It's either they did not have a plan or the plan they had was not executed properly. But he can bounce back because it's not the first time he goes down. He knows how to go down and go up. The only question would be how soon will he bounce back because, truly speaking, we need people like him in our football. The only thing is that you need to have your vision right because most of us undermine the vision and mission. Jomo raised me and I am what I am today because of him, so I hope he can make a speedy return."
