Comitis: I Lost A Coach, 3 Important Players & My Captain...

Cape Town City chairman, John Comitis has opened up about the club’s overall improvement since its inaugural season, adding that there is evidence of why the second season was better than the first.

In the two years since their inception, the club has gone on to prove many critics wrong, securing a trophy in their inaugural campaign under former head coach Eric Tinkler and ending off runners-up in the 2017 MTN8 final as well as fifth place on the Absa Premiership league standings, under the mentorship of Benni McCarthy.

Speaking to the media at the Absa Premiership Woza Nazo press conference, Comitis believes that besides winning a trophy in their first season and no silverware in the 2017/18 campaign, the club’s second stint in the Premier Soccer League has been the most successful.

“We came out of the blocks, flying, a lot of people said we were lucky, everyone said our second season is going to be a telling one, are we going to be another Leicester City,” Comitis told the media.

“If I remember, Wits won that season and they were the Leicester City…

“(But) the challenges in our second year which was insurmountable because we lost our head coach, we took a coach (which) was his first professional job as a head coach, no idea what to expect other than the fact that I know him from the age of 18 and I could vouch for his character and who he is.

"We had our two, three best players leave us, our captain signed a pre-contract with another team halfway through the season – when you add all these challenges, although we finished two positions lower, I think the second season was more successful than the first,” Comitis added.
