Jabu ‘Shuffle’ Mahlangu has has sent a heartfelt message to South African football legend Ephraim ‘Jomo’ Sono.
In one of the stints he had with the South Africa’s senior national team, Sono selected Mahlangu (then known as Pule) in the squad for the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea and Japan.
Mahlangu was one of the top talents in Mzansi with Kaizer Chiefs at the time, who had been terrorising defenders with his silky skills and speed in the league.
As a result, Mahlangu was one of seven local-based players in Sono’s 23-man Bafana Bafana squad for the global showpiece, along with his then Chiefs teammate Cyril Nzama, Thabo Mngomeni (Orlando Pirates), MacBeth Sibaya and Thabang Molefe (Jomo Cosmos), Andre Arendse (Santos) and Calvin Marlin (Ajax Cape Town).
“Happy Birthday to our South African football Icon Jomo Sono. Thank you so much for believing in me and for selecting me to be part of the 2002 Korea/Japan world cup squad,” said Mahlangu in his message on Facebook.
