Former Kaizer Chiefs star, Jabu Mahlangu, believes that coach Steve Komphela’s disciplined approach is exactly what the Amakhosi need.
Mahlangu was affectionately nicknamed ‘Shuffle’ for his ability to turn defenders around and his showmanship. He came through the ranks at Chiefs establishing himself in the first team as a firm fan’s favourite from 1999-2004, scoring 27 goals in 99 appearances, before moving abroad.
The retired midfielder worked with Komphela when he was an assistant coach at Chiefs, and believes that the club have made the right choice by finally appointing a local coach.
Mahlangu spoke to Soccer Laduma about Komphela’s approach saying, “Steve’s training sessions involve a lot of running. We did a lot of running without the ball.”
“Komphela’s teams are not easy to beat. If you’re in Steve’s team, you’re going to run. He likes players who work very hard! He doesn’t believe in superstars,” the 34-year-old concluded.
Mahlangu thinks that Komphela will bring something different to the Naturena-based outfit and urged Chiefs fans to be patient with the new coach as it will take time for him to instil his philosophy in the players.
