Khune Unfairly Criticised?

Itumeleng Khune has come under harsh criticism from some fans on social media platforms following his recent contract debacle with Kaizer Chiefs, in what appears to be unfair criticism in the modern game of football.

Chiefs announced in June that the goalkeeper would not be extending his contract at the club after seeing it expire. While he was linked with a move abroad and to Mamelodi Sundowns a return to Naturena was never off the cards.

The Siya crew reported yesterday that Khune and Chiefs had agreed on a deal in principle and the club followed up shortly after with an official statement confirming the news.

The 28-year-old’s prompted some negative responses from a faction of the football fraternity which didn’t take to kindly to the saga:

Sinethemba Sikrweqe ‏@tigerberry_8987 tweeted, “He showed us being a mercenary for money is far more important then being a loyal club legend...I don't trust him."

Gabonewe Setshedi ‏@Gabojust tweeted, “Football does indeed live up 2 the capitalist ideal; that if there is money 2 be made, sum1 will find a way 2 make it."

MPHO MOTALA ‏@mphoVmotala tweeted “....unfair and disrespectful to the fans ...I will not sing Khune Khune anymore ....cause we were betrayed 4 de sake of money."

However his return was also welcomed by a number of the Amakhosi faithful:

Lebza-Lagamthy-Moagi ‏@Lagamthym tweeted, “Good move for both Him and Chiefs. They both needed each other. Masango too must come back.”

Sbusiso ‏@SbuM8 tweeted, “It a great move that where he belongs even the 2 goalkeepers will learn a thing or two frm his experience."

Pule V Masukela ‏@DaPules tweeted, “Great news and I hope he learned a good lesson in that experience#Khosi4Life."

These responses could be a little harsh as contract negotiations around player salaries are common in modern day football.
