Where Did The Goalscorers Go? - The Last Eight Golden Boot Winners
If no player in the Absa Premiership steps up in the final games of the 2018/19 campaign then we will have gone seven seasons without a 20-goal striker, where did the goalscorers go?
Look through the most recent Golden Boot winners with the gallery above!
At present it is Black Leopards’ Mwape Musonda who leads the race for the Lesley Manyathela award with 13 goals to his name, and it seems unlikely that he will be caught given that his nearest competitors – Gift Motupa and Tshegofatso Mabasa – are on only nine.
The last time that a striker scored 20 goals in South Africa’s top-flight was when the evergreen Siyabonga Nomvethe bagged 20 for Moroka Swallows in 2011/12, with no striker managing to even make it past 14 in the six seasons that have followed.
Players such as Percy Tau, Rodney Ramagalela, Lebogang Manyama, Bernard Parker and others have all managed to get their hands on the Golden Boot award in recent years, but nobody since Collins Mbesuma (the only player to have won it twice) in 2004/05, has a player got more than 20 goals in a single campaign – he got 25.
Who is your money on to win the Golden Boot this year? Musonda?
