Despite it already being confirmed by Chippa United that Steve Komphela has agreed terms to take over at the club next season, Maritzburg United are standing firm that the 46-year-old remains their coach.
The Siya crew earlier broke the news on Tuesday (May 13) that Komphela had signed a deal to take over at Chippa in 2014/15.
The Chilli Boys' Communications and Marketing manager, Luthando Zibeko, said at the time, “Look, he has signed as a coach, but we will be releasing all the details during the course of the week."
Nevertheless, despite this confirmation directly from the Cape Town club, Maritzburg are maintaining their position that Komphela is going nowhere. The Team of Choice are adamant that their coach still has two years left on his current deal, and will be going nowhere anytime soon.
United's Team Manager, Quintin Jettoo, explained this to the crew, saying, "He is still our coach. He has two years left on his contract and nothing has changed. It's simple - in our understanding Steve is still our head coach."
"There's been no change in this status at all. This is the crux of it to be honest. I'm speaking to Steve regularly on the phone, and there's no problem to get hold of him. He's still in Maritzburg as we speak."
Judging from Maritzburg's comments, it appears as if Komphela's deal hasn't totally been concluded just yet. However, Soccer Laduma understands that Komphela has a buy-out clause in his contract, and it could be a matter of Chippa United paying that fee in order for a deal to go through.
The crew will closely monitor any further developments.
