MTN8 Final Preview
The first knockout competition final of the 2021/22 Premier Soccer League season is upon and it promises to be an enthralling one, with two ball-playing sides set to lock horns at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Cape Town City, champions in 2018, take on a Mamelodi Sundowns side yet to win the MTN8 under the current sponsors of the competition. The Tshwane giants have been to the final on two occasions since last winning it but were beaten by Kaizer Chiefs in 2008 and then the now-defunct Bidvest Wits in 2016, so will be hoping it’s third time lucky when they take on the Citizens, who have also taken part in two previous finals. Both clubs have players who can entertain and play the role of hero on the day, while the technical teams on both sides have loads of experience when it comes to playing in cup finals. Soccer Laduma previews the first final of the season in this edition!
Stuart Baxter Tactics Feature
After winning the Nedbank Cup last season, and then changing name to Marumo Gallants, the club had high hopes of starting the 2021/22 campaign well. They brought in French coach Sebastien Migné, as well as Harris Choeu as technical director. These appointments were meant to inspire a flying start, but the struggle has continued. Recently, the club confirmed that they dismissed Migné after the coach pleaded guilty for an incident at OR Tambo International Airport following a 3-1 defeat to Golden Arrows. According to the statement released by Gallants, Migné was charged for insubordination and for using abusive language towards Choeu, in front of the technical team and players. Soccer Laduma got in touch with “TV4” to talk about their head coach’s departure, how his role was not quite accepted by the Frenchman and what exactly happened at the airport.
Siya Special: Fans’ Return To Stadiums
The PSL has confirmed that it’s “targeting” the MTN8 final this weekend for a stress test on whether fans can safely return to the stadiums. Although there appears to be some movement in spectators finally being able to watch their teams live from the grandstand, the Siya crew has been told what the biggest stumbling block is! Earlier this month, SAFA paved the way by using Bafana Bafana’s 2022 World Cup home qualifier against Ethiopia as a pilot project, having been given the green-light by the government to usher fans back. But they all had to be vaccinated and the number was limited to only 2000 as per COVID regulations in the country. In this in-dept look at the situation, Soccer Laduma analyses what the concern is for the PSL as its Executive Committee continues to wrestle with how to safely open the gates. We also got a few club officials to break down the expenses affiliated with not only the Big Three hosting matches, but whether this was feasible during a pandemic!
