Gordon Igesund believes the Bafana Bafana squad he has assembled is well balanced and capable of winning the 2014 CHAN tournament that South Africa is hosting.
Igesund, while not happy with the preparations so far, was pleased that everything is now sorted out and remained positive that they would be ready by the time the tournament begins.
On Saturday all the players assembled, bar the Kaizer Chiefs players who will join on Sunday, and Moeneeb Josephs, who though in Cape Town, had not joined up with the team yet.
South Africa kick off their CHAN challenge in a week’s time when they meet Mozambique on the 11th of January in the tournament’s opening fixture. They will meet Mali and Nigeria in their other group matches.
“It has been trying times over the last few weeks but I want to thank the teams for making this happen because it has been tough for all of us. Several meetings have been held and we now have the players we need for the tournament,” Igesund told the SAFA website.
“We are very grateful and appreciate the support of everyone because it was not easy. I am glad because the national team belongs to all of us and it is important to have the best players.
“It is a fact that the start to the preparations has not been ideal, but we remain positive because the players really want to be here and play for their country. We are in a tough group but we will make it happen because by the time the tournament starts, we will be ready.”
“I believe I have chosen a strong team which is well-balanced. We will do our best to win the tournament to get that winning feeling, and we will play the kind of football that is expected of us which is running and exciting football.“
