Igesund: They Deserved To Win It

After his team lost 3-1 to Nigeria in their final CHAN group game on Sunday night, South African coach Gordon Igesund said that Nigeria deserved to win.

Igesund said the Super Eagles had out-muscled them, and were physically stronger, and had taken advantage of his team's early errors, but congratulated Stephen Keshi's team.

The defeat sends the hosts crashing out of the tournament, as Mali defeated Mozambique in the other game on the night, to win the group, with Nigeria ending second.

“Obviously I’m very disappointed, we had to try and get something out of this game, but at the end of the day I’ve got to say well done to Nigeria, I think they deserved to win it, they were more physical than us, they won the second ball, and they scored the goals.

“They capitalised on our two errors at the beginning, the first two goals we conceded, but at the end of the day you’ve got to say well done to them, they deserved it.

“They out-muscled us, they were physically much much stronger than us in areas, and that’s not an excuse, that’s just how it is, they were stronger than us, we tried to take the game to them, we tried to create situations, but they got the first opportunity from a real error I suppose, and then of course we gave a penalty away.

“Once you’re 2-0 down and have got to get something out of the game, you’re going to try take a chance and throw bodies forward, and we did that.

"I took off a defender, we put extra players on, we had three at the back, we had five upfront attacking in the last fifteen minutes, if we had got a goal a little earlier, something could have happened.

“But it wasn’t to be, and it was one of those days, so well done to them.”
