Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund is surprised by the inclusion of Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns in the list of clubs that will not be required to release players for the upcoming CHAN tournament.
Initially, there were four PSL games set to take place in January , with Orlando Pirates playing against SuperSport United, AmaZulu and Ajax Cape Town, while SuperSport and AmaZulu are also set to face off.
But with the congestion of fixtures, due to CHAN as well as the break for mourning the passing of former president Nelson Mandela, the PSL released a statement confirming that the match between Chiefs and Sundowns will now take place in January too.
Igesund confirmed that he had discussed the matter with SAFA president Danny Jordaan, who had met with the PSL chairman, and that his initial discussions did not include Amakhosi and the Brazilians.
"I have no comment to make other than, I was told by the chairman that he had come to an agreement with the PSL chairman that all the players from Pirates and the teams that they are playing against (Ajax, SuperSport, AmaZulu) may not be available," Igesund told the Siya-crew.
"There was never any agreement about the Chiefs versus Sundowns game, therefore I'm surprised that the PSL have issued a statement because of their game."
When pressed for further comment, he said, "I would have to refer you to the association because as far as I am concerned, the matter discussed with the chairman involved Pirates and the teams that they are playing against, not Chiefs and Sundowns."
The top-of-the-table battle between Amakhosi and Sundowns is now penned in for Tuesday 28 January 2014.
