Bafana Bafana head coach, Gordon Igesund, has offered his services and those of Bafana’s medical team to May Mahlangu as he recovers from injury.
Mahlangu was dealt a heavy blow earlier this year when an Achilles tendon injury all but ruled him out for the remainder of the year, denting his chances of securing his next big move.
The 24-year-old midfielder will see his contract with Helsingborg expire in December and it seems unlikely that he will renew his deal with the side, despite the club’s eagerness to hold on to him.
Mahlangu’s untimely injury hasn’t helped his efforts to find a new club and even though there has been previous interest from Turkey and France, he first needs to get himself fit before he can secure himself a deal with a new club.
Before his injury Mahlangu was making waves in the Bafana set-up with a number of fine performances, and Igesund hopes that he will come back and continue that once he’s fit.
In order to help his recovery, Igesund has offered his own services to the player.
Speaking to the Siya crew he said, “I’ve told May that we can work with him if he wants to. At Bafana we don’t just need to look at the players that are playing right now, we need to look after any players that are an asset to the national team.
“We can do some sessions with him. I’ll help him out personally and my medical team is also available to him if he wants to use them. I'd do the same for any of my players."
The player’s representative, Rob Moore, confirmed Igesund’s offer and it is now purely a case of the former Swedish Athlete of the Year regaining his fitness and getting back on the field.
