Ajax Amsterdam and Bafana Bafana midfielder Thulani Serero was released from the Bafana Bafana squad last week Friday, ahead of the team’s FIFA World Cup qualifier against Botswana, due to disciplinary reasons.
South Africa went on to win the Group A qualifier 4-1, although failed to reach the final round of African World Cup qualifying.
Following a media frenzy, highlighting Serero’s exit, coach Gordon Igesund told the Siya crew that the former Ajax Cape Town midfielder is still young and that the Bafana door is still open to him.
“You know we can't be talking much on what happened, because as I have said before, he asked that he should not play because he was scared that he would be injured. He was not injured yet, but was scared of being injured ahead of (Ajax’s) the UEFA Champions League game against Barcelona.
“He didn't fake the injury but he said he has a stiff muscle, which six other players had as well. As for him coming back to the national team, I don't have a problem with him. We all make mistakes and what we need is just to admit that we were wrong and life goes on.
“He is still young and the door is still open. We need players like him for the national team,” the former Moroka Swallows coach explained.
