With Bidvest Wits currently sit on 38 points and Orlando Pirates just above them on 39, neither team is able to get even close to Sundowns’ impressive 71-point haul in 2016, while Masandawana’s highest potential total is 67 points if they win all nine of their remaining games.
Since the 2010/11 season, the minimum that any team has needed to lift the title has been 57 when Kaizer Chiefs won it in 2012/13, while Sundowns’ 71 points in 2015/16 remain the highest that has been achieved.
As things stand the race for the Absa Premiership is mathematically wide open as plenty of teams still stand a chance, however realistically there is only a handful of clubs, and most likely the top three, who could potentially go all the way and get their hands on the trophy later this year.
In five of the last eight seasons – including the last two – a final tally of 60 points has been enough to win the Absa Premiership, though with no team having won more than 50% of their games so far it could be even less this time around.
