How Downs Can Break Chiefs’ Record…
Mamelodi Sundowns could set an incredibly impressive Absa Premiership record in February, snatching it off Kaizer Chiefs if they manage to pull it off.
Pitso Mosimane’s side drew 0-0 with Orlando Pirates on Saturday to extend their unbeaten run in the league to 22 games in total, with their last defeat coming back in January when the Buccaneers beat them 3-1.
The Glamour Boys managed to go 31 league games without defeat back in 2005 in a run that stretched from January to October, however, Sundowns’ commitments elsewhere mean that their run will have have to go on substantially longer if they’re to break it.
Masandawana need to avoid defeat in the league between now and February 9th when they take on Black Leopards at home, with games coming thick and fast against the likes of SuperSport United, Maritzburg United, Baroka, Kaizer Chiefs, Polokwane City, Highlands Park and AmaZulu.
If Sundowns do manage to go all the way, then it is likely that they will consequently keep up their hunt for a second consecutive league title, a feat that hasn’t been achieved since Pirates won the Absa Premiership back-to-back in 2011 and 2012.
