Ajax Cape Town defender, Thulani Hlatshwayo, has agreed terms with Wits and will join them when his current contract expires in June.
The Siya crew recently reported that ‘Tyson’ was believed to have signed a pre-contract with the Clever Boys ahead of a move to Braamfontein, and the player himself has since confirmed the news
However, despite his pending move, the 24-year-old has pledged himself to the Urban Warriors for the remainder of the season and will not be looking to push through a move in the current January transfer window.
The defender, who has been in fine form over the last two seasons, had been heavily linked with both Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns, although both teams were pipped to the post by The Students.
Speaking to the crew about his future move, and the reasons behind it, Hlatshwayo said, “Ajax Cape Town have been a big influential for me. They gave me the opportunity to display my talent and helped me to understand football and become the player that I am today. They taught me life skills and how to behave myself, that is why want to finish the last six months of my contract with Ajax before joining Wits.
“Being linked with the big teams has never affected me in any way, but it did motivate me to do well knowing that there are teams watching my hard work.
“I chose to play for Wits, with whom we have agreed on terms, because I saw the chance of playing regularly and be chosen to represent my country. I’m also hoping to one day get an opportunity to play abroad. It was not easy, and involved disagreeing with some of the most important people in my life, but it was my decision to choose Wits. It was not that I’m scared of competition, as it's still going to be difficult to play at Wits because they have very good players.
“I’m 24 now and still have a lot I learn in football. I’m happy with the decision I have taken, because I feel like I'm not yet ready to play for a big team. After two more years I will be ready.”
Hlatshwayo is yet another player whose exit from Ajax has been confirmed, with Lebogang Manyama already having departed for SuperSport United, and Thato Mokeke set to join him there at the end of the season.
