Barcelona are hoping to put a difficult few days behind them when they host Elche in the first leg of the Copa del Rey last 16 on Thursday, January 8. The Catalans suffered a shock 1-0 loss at Real Sociedad this past Sunday. Head coach, Luis Enrique was heavily criticised after the match following his decision to leave star forwards, Lionel Messi and Neymar on the bench at the start of that match. Should Enrique’s charges come out tops in this cup encounter, they will nicely set up an epic quarter-final tie against either Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid. Elche on the other hand are huge underdogs going into this tie, having lost 3-0 and 4-0 on their last two visits. They progressed to this stage courtesy of a 1-0 aggregate win over Valladolid, but sit bottom of the Spanish La Liga, having just picked up two wins from 17 matches.
Atletico Madrid will lock horns with fierce nemesis, Real Madrid, in the Copa Del Rey last 16 clash at the Vicente Calderón Stadium on Wednesday, January 7. Los Rojiblancos have already pipped Real to the Spanish Super Cup as well as the Spanish La Liga title, and will relish another upset in this cup tie. Diego Simeone’s side have another plus in their camp with the arrival of former Atletico frontman, Fernando Torres. The former Liverpool and Chelsea striker has re-joined the Spanish champions from AC Milan on loan seven-and-a-half-years after leaving for England. Real Madrid coach, Carlo Ancelotti, who saw his side suffer their first defeat since September when they were humbled with a 2-1 scoreline by Valencia, will aim to put aside that loss and bounce back in a crunch tie away from home. The Italian mentor has only got the better of Simeone three times in eight meetings since arriving in the Spanish capital. The two sides have now met in four of the last five seasons in the Copa Del Rey, with Los Blancos having lifted the trophy 19 times to Atletico’s 10.
Valencia will host Espanyol for the Round of 16 first-leg match in the Copa del Rey on Wednesday, January 7, at the Mestalla Stadium, where the hosts just shockingly upset Real Madrid. Los Che roared back from a goal down to upset league leaders, Real Madrid, at home in the league. Espanyol on the other hand could be in for another hiding having already visited Valencia where they were comfortably thrashed 3-1.

BARCELONA V ELCHE
League position: Barcelona 2nd and Elche 19th
Useful facts: This is the football equivalent of a lamb entering a lion’s enclosure at a zoo during feeding time. Barcelona are still licking their wounds after a recent loss to Real Sociedad, a match in which both Lionel Messi and Neymar somewhat strangely started from the bench. A ferocious response will surely be coming in this Copa del Rey quarter-final tie at the Camp Nou. The little team from Alicante could be facing an absolute hiding if they’re not extremely resolute.
Henrico Botes: Barcelona win. They lost their last match and will want a reaction.
ATLETICO MADRID V REAL MADRID
League position: Atletico 3rd and Real 1st
Useful facts: This massive Spanish derby comes at almost a perfect time for football loving purists. Atletico are starting to rediscover their title-winning form of last season, whereas Real recently recorded a rare loss and will be wanting to bounce back. This Copa del Rey clash could be an absolute humdinger in the Spanish capital. Expect Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale to come flying out of the blocks in this cracking affair.
Henrico Botes: I think Real will nick the win based on current form.
VALENCIA V ESPANYOL
League position: Valencia 4th and Espanyol 10th
Useful facts: Valencia are putting their name into the hat for the La Liga title race with some convincing performances of late. Defeating Real Madrid ended the Spanish giants’ impressive recent winning streak, opening things up in the race for the crown. The Oranges will want to continue their run as they welcome a solid Espanyol outfit to the Mestalla Stadium. The Nuno Santo-coached team will be favourites at home in this cup encounter.
Henrico Botes: Valencia win.
