A former Kaizer Chiefs star has confirmed that an African football legend and former Chelsea midfielder had a wish of playing for Amakhosi at some point in his career.
In the second of his two-year spell in Azerbaijan, Hendrick ‘Pule’ Ekstein had the honour of playing alongside Michael Essien as the strong Ghanaian was winding down his career at Azerbaijan Premier League outfit Sabail between 2019 and 2020.
The Bekkersdal-born player says the ex-Real Madrid star told him about his wish to play for the Soweto giants.
In his interview with Soccer Laduma, as he reminisces about his two years in Azerbaijan where he played for two different clubs in Sabah and Sabail, Ekstein reveals what he was told by the legendary Essien, who is now an assistant coach at Danish Superliga outfit FC Nordsjaelland.
“He follows South African football and his wish was to play for Kaizer Chiefs. He told me that the team he would have loved to play for in South Africa was Kaizer Chiefs. But he knows about South African football and the other teams. You must remember that he once came to South Africa through (a) Budweiser promotion. He knows a lot of teams here, but he told me that the team he would have loved to play for is Chiefs. But he has since retired and has done his coaching badges and is now coaching in Denmark,” said Ekstein.
Ekstein spoke exclusively to Soccer Laduma in this week's issue of Soccer Laduma, edition 1241, where he talks about:
- Why the ex-Chiefs crowd favourite came back to Mzansi though he was still loved and appreciated in Azerbaijan
- His relationship with AmaZulu coach Benni McCarthy which led to him joining the Durban-based club
- Usuthu’s slow start to the season and losing in the first leg of their CAF Champions League preliminary round fixture
